Monday - Feb 22 - Last day in Hoi An
My roommate and I hired a cab and traveled to My Song, a Champa archaeological site. The Champa were an ancient civilization that lived between 2 AD through 11 AD. They lived in the mountainous remote areas west of Hoi An. Their civilization had its ups during which it built large complex temples and downs when they were destroyed by their enemy. The pictures show you what is left including phallic symbol icon that was used by taking the water poured over the icon and spreading it on their fields to ensure a good crop. The buildings are made with brick, without mortar, and are able to reach great heights. The tablet you see is their writings made in stone which is similar to Lao and/or Burmese. The picture of me behind a headless statute is an illustration of how some of these sites were pillared. French foreign legion soldiers took the heads as souvenirs which they later sold to private collectors.
My last afternoon was a leisurely one and included my getting a hair cut, shave, ear cleaning and back massage....all for $10 US. I never had a straight razor shave before and it was a treat. What surprised me was the barber putting on a headlight and giving the both ears a hair removal treatment...I can definitely hear better...huuh. To commemorate this special event, I ask a patron’s wife to take my picture.
Back to the hotel to shower and pack for our departure the next day. Ben purchased 4 suits, including a tuxedo, 5 shirts and a winter coat for $1,000. He also had 2 pair of shoes made for an additional $100. As i said in an earlier posting, if they don't have it...they will make it.
Diner included all of the Hoi An specialties with fried wanton being my favorite....night...night..
